about

This song was inspired by the movie Amélie (Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) and was written for all the introverted people out there. In the movie, Amélie's neighbour, who suffers from vitreous bone disease, is painting the same picture over and over each year, namely The Breakfast of the Rowers by Renoir. In this picture, there is a girl holding a glass of water. She is in the centre of the scene and yet she doesn't seem to be part of the crowd. In the movie, it is suggested that Amélie is like that girl from the painting, always in her own world rather than interacting with others. It could also be me. So, this painting and the interpretation of it in the movie, was kind of the starting point for the song. Only I prefer wine, so I turned the girl holding the waterglass to the girl holding the wineglass. Cheers!

lyrics

The Girl Holding The Wineglass

She is the girl holding the wineglass
She stands in the centre of a crowd
Shares her thoughts with her wine
In a faraway place and time
She doesn't quite fit into the design
And yet she doesn't stand out

She wanders quietly on her interior mind-path
Where she's sheltered and undisturbed
Only sometimes does she decide
To carefully peek outside
The curtains of her mind
Half curious, half alert

She looks
Around her
She sees
Things that rare-
-ly catch
Others' eyes
But she collects
Them inside

This collection fills up her wide heart
A box like a secret treasury
Holding snippets of what she sees
She reassembles them piece by piece
Creating fabulous sceneries
Thus she models her destiny

Little sparks may mysteriously cross your life-path
As her world unexpectedly meets yours
Surely you can feel its grace
Though you'll never see her face
She vanishes without a trace
Like a fairy she smiles and withdraws

She looks
Around her
She sees
Things that rare-
-ly catch
Others' eyes
But she collects
Them inside

She is the girl holding the wineglass
She stands in the centre of a crowd
As she slowly sips her wine
A new image forms in her mind
Unusual yet divine
Another charm for her to send out
