about

This song is a special one for me and a very personal one as well. It has been written for those who are different and are being bullied because of it. It has been written to remind them that everyone has a special talent and those who appear to be different even more so. This song was inspired by the German movie „Beyond Silence“.

The movie is about a girl called Lara, who is different from everyone. Her parents are deaf and the family is communicating with each other in sign language. Lara herself can hear and has an extraordinary talent for music – a world into which her parents cannot follow. Because she is so different, she is being bullied. Her music teacher, however, sees her remarkable talent. He becomes her mentor and encourages her to continue her musical journey. At one point in the movie, it turns out that Lara is the only one who is not invited to her classmate's birthday party. At this point, her music teacher tells her: "Don't be sad, Lara. You know, ravens fly in flocks, but the eagle flies alone." - meaning that she may be different from the others but will just leave them all behind if she keeps developing her talent and spreads her eagle's wings. When I heard that sentence I knew I had to write about it. As far as I remember I have felt different all my life and having been bullied myself in school and found a refuge in music, this was also my story.

The song is addressed at a girl since I was thinking of Lara and myself while writing - but it doesn't mean that this is not true for boys, non-binary or transgender children in the same way. It is true for everyone who feels different. It is time to spread our eagle's wings!

lyrics

The Eagle Flies Alone

Hey girl
Did they make fun of you again
‘Cause your words don’t make sense to them
But that’s not your fault at all
In the end, it will be them who fall

Hey girl
Did they hurt your fragile mind
Because you’re of a different kind
Has it ever occurred to you
There’s a special side that doesn’t yet get through

If they’re laughing at you, don’t stare at them in shock
Even though it hurts you to the bone
You know, ravens fly in flocks
But the eagle flies alone
You know ravens fly in flocks
But the eagle flies alone

Hey girl
There’s a place only known to you
Of which they don’t really have a clue
It’s you who holds the key
When they judge you superficially

Hey girl
Let them laugh and talk
They don’t see the magic of your thoughts
There lies a strength yet unforeseen
It’s time to spread your eagle’s wings

If they’re laughing at you, don’t stare at them in shock
Even though it hurts you to the bone
You know, ravens fly in flocks
But the eagle flies alone
You know ravens fly in flocks
But the eagle flies alone
